The myth about AI and Machine Learning replacing the Medical Devices

 


At first, Let us understand the machine learning definition:


Machine learning is an application of artificial intelligence (AI) that provides systems the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience (training data) without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning focuses on the development of computer programs that can access data and use it to learn for themselves.


In the above definition - Data is the most important element. A machine learning algorithm/model can't be developed without Data.


In healthcare - Data could be Diagnostic images that help view inside the body to help figure out the causes of an illness or injury and confirm a diagnosis.

The Source of the Diagnostic images is the Diagnostic X-ray Devices.


Now, let’s understand the traditional approach to programming.


For example, we used to write a simple program to find the average of the number, then input a series of data, and it prints the output data. So, basically, we had to write/develop a programming model here.

But In machine learning, we provide the output data against the input data, and machine learning helps to build a program.


So, Data is the most important element here in machine learning and the source of data is diagnostic imaging which we get from a patient examination through Diagnostic X-ray Devices.

So if Machine learning can't replace Medical devices, so what it can be used for?

  • It could be used potentially to provide the organized data, to provide a better insight into patient data to make a decision, to predict any future illness.
Example: To find if the cancer cells are growing?

It is difficult for the radiologist and doctors to see a very small change in the cancer cell size with the eyes. So a machine learning algorithm can be useful here to provide a cell size growth pattern quantitatively with diagnostic imaging data which helps doctors to make decisions.

But here also, the first and foremost is that data which source is Diagnostic X-ray Devices.
